Centre socio-culturel Simone Veil

Description

A city of contrasts and cultural diversity, Sarcelles is animated by a strong civic and artistic energy carried by its many local associations. The Cèdre Bleu site — comprising a 19th‑century chapel, adjoining buildings and a listed garden — offers an ideal setting for the new socio‑cultural center, conceived by the civic architect as a space for shared engagement and a unifying civic landmark. The architectural rehabilitation of this heritage ensemble embodies this ambition.

By uniting the Maison de la Culture, Maison des Arts, and Maison des Associations on a single site, the civic architect promotes inclusivity and accessibility. The former chapel, reimagined as the Maison de la Culture, offers a grand yet unconventional setting for collective events. The side naves host exhibition and reading spaces with a café, while the balconies accommodate a media library. The 15‑meter‑high central nave becomes an adaptable auditorium with a retractable stage and telescopic seating. Acoustic curtains enable independent use of the foyer and hall, and restored openings replace lost stained glass, reviving the space’s natural luminosity.

Adjoining the chapel, the cultural architect equipped the Maison des Arts and Maison des Associations with dedicated facilities tailored to their specific cultural and community programs. The circulation strategy orchestrates fluid connections between the three entities, encouraging interaction and cross‑programming among users.

On an urban scale, the complex reasserts its civic presence, featuring a restored façade, a landscaped park of remarkable trees and a broad stepped forecourt that forms an open‑air amphitheatre. The socio‑cultural center extends well beyond its walls. The civic architect has envisioned a renewed civic landmark, where heritage architecture and contemporary community life converge.

REVUE DE PRESSE | Centre culturel Simone Veil

Many thanks to Le Monde and to Isabelle Régnier for showcasing the Simone Veil Cultural Centre project in Sarcelles, and for highlighting our minimal-intervention approach — preserving as much of the existing structure as possible and reworking the outdoor spaces.
The work on the entrance threshold, with its large timber forecourt, and the emphasis placed on the uses and functionality of the complex have been highlighted.
We can't wait to see the public take ownership of the chapel's central space, make use of its many configurations, and bring the multimedia library to life in the side aisles and the chapel gallery.
