In 1999, Patrick Mauger founded Architecture Patrick Mauger. In 2002, his first project, the Le Tourp Cultural Centre, was nominated for the distinguished Première Œuvre award in France.  Later that year, the Louvre Museum commissioned Mauger to design the Museum of Archaeology in Jerash, Jordan, integrating the institution within the existing cryptoporticus structure of the Temple of Zeus. In late 2002, LVMH also commissioned him to design the New York headquarters and exhibition spaces for Phillips, formerly known as Phillips Auctioneers.

His practice focuses on the adaptive reuse, transformation and extension of existing buildings, reorganizing spatial and functional frameworks to accommodate evolving uses and contemporary patterns of occupation.  Mauger has also developed a research methodology informed by neuroarchitecture during his collaboration with Jacques Glowinski, honorary administrator of the Collège de France.  Their research establishes parallels between the brain’s three primary networks — executive, regulatory and energetic — and the fundamental dimensions of architecture: spatial organization, spatial perception and technical systems.  This methodology has informed Mauger’s projects including the Arts et Métiers ParisTech, the Institute for Women and Interdisciplinary Research in Science and Health, the Learning Planet Institute, as well as the new campus for the Institut Français de la Mode.

Patrick Mauger completed his Masters degree from the Marseille School of Architecture, before completing postgraduate studies in multimedia communication at Sciences Com Audencia Business School and architectural theory at Paris Villemin School of Architecture.  Awarded a scholarship by the Académie Française – Fondation Jean Walter-Zellidja, Mauger conducted research in the United States on commercial urbanism, later publishing his book, Centres Commerciaux with Éditions du Moniteur.    Mauger also established expertise in large-scale cultural projects — including the Louvre Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts of Lyon, while working over a decade with renown architects Jean-Paul Viguier and Jean-Michel Wilmotte.   He developed a strong architectural practice centered on adaptive reuse strategies, cultural programming and rehabilitative interventions, including the extension of the Collège de France in collaboration with Bernard Huet.

Since 2010, Patrick Mauger has served as Architect-Consultant to the French Ministry of Culture.  In 2022, Mauger was elected to the prestigious Académie d’Architecture and is a current member of the Architecture et Maîtrise d’Ouvrage, as well as the Association Française pour le Développement Urbain.

Patrick Mauger Architecture team at the premises of the new campus of the French Institute of Fashion

Founded in 1999, Architecture Patrick Mauger designs and executes projects for both private and public clients. One of the agency’s specialties is to work, since its inception, on existing buildings, whether for rehabilitation or extension, in heritage environments and across all urban configurations. The agency possesses extensive knowledge of all stakeholders involved in heritage preservation: Architectes des Bâtiments de France, state services, the Ministry of Culture, and various associations.

To guarantee the objectives set by the Project Owners, the agency collaborates with recognized economists and assembles a tailor-made team for each project, including adapted engineering firms that meet the necessary competencies.

Experienced in various types of project setups, projects are carried out in partnership with major construction companies. These partnerships are particularly evident in design-build contracts or global performance markets.

Projects are characterized by high quality of use, resulting from a proven approach and a collaborative process with initiators, decision-makers, and users. The agency invents spaces that meet new needs and are capable of adaptation. The imagined plasticity allows the building to reinvent itself, to evolve naturally over time. A focus on space, light, and material shapes a distinct personality for each creation.

Environmental quality, recycling, and reuse have been at the heart of the design process for over ten years. Research work has led to the perfection of a natural ventilation system through the installation of thermal chimneys. The agency qualifies and labels its achievements.
