Restaurants administratif et universitaire Sorbonne Université, Place Jussieu

Description

At the heart of the Pierre and Marie Curie Campus, the educational building design of the university and administrative restaurants, conceived by a higher education architect, enhances campus life and connects the city with the landscape, enriching a vibrant environment through new links between buildings, respect for the original plan, and diverse spatial typologies.

Set within one quadrant of the original urban grid, the campus restaurant integrates harmoniously into the existing topography, preserving historical pedestrian axes and two mature plane trees that anchor the site’s memory. Its double-height glazed façade establishes a strong visual and spatial dialogue with the landscaped grounds, dissolving the boundary between interior and exterior. The continuous glazed envelope maximizes daylight penetration and visual porosity, while deep overhangs ensure solar control and seasonal comfort. Above, an extensive green roof functions as both ecological infrastructure and contemplative retreat. This educational building design offers users a suspended landscape for pause and reflection away from the campus’s active rhythms.
The south‑east façade of the educational building opens generously onto a softly contoured lawn, where canopied outdoor dining terraces foster social interaction in shaded microclimates. Along the Cassan building, the restaurant and cafeteria are articulated through a series of stepped terraces, vegetative decks and planted roofs, which weave greenery through the architectural composition and reinforce the continuity between the built form and landscape. These layered thresholds of the educational building design contribute to a dynamic and inclusive campus environment experience throughout the day.

The strategy of the campus architect choreographs a network of interconnected routes that anchors the administrative restaurant within the wider campus framework. Universal‑access ramps, transitional landings, and lateral promenades link the Jussieu platform with the Saint‑Bernard lawns through a fluid topographical sequence. A peripheral promenade extends to an elevated terrace, prolonging the dining area into an open‑air belvedere overlooking the site. The interior organization alternates between monumental double‑height volumes and human‑scaled alcoves, generating a spectrum of spatial experiences — from collective gathering to quiet retreat. Acoustic treatments, ambient lighting and adaptable furniture systems enhance the comfort and flexibility of this educational building design, allowing the spaces to evolve into coworking, study and event settings.
