Passage Saint-Germain

Description

In the city of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, the former Galerie Saint-Germain is fully reconfigured and refurbished in response to declining commercial activity. Occupying the ground floor of a mixed-use development with three basement levels of parking, the building rehabilitation establishes a strong architectural identity, drawing on the typology of Parisian covered passages.

The adaptive reuse architect reconfigures the retail layout to enhance operational efficiency and enable larger, more flexible, and reprogrammable commercial units capable of accommodating evolving commercial uses. Interior and exterior shopfronts are redesigned as part of a unified architectural and graphic language, establishing a coherent, legible and continuous retail frontage that strengthens spatial continuity and reinforces the identity of the commercial passage.

At street level, the building rehabilitation carefully redefined the public through a continuous, contrasting stone “carpet”, establishing a clear threshold between city and interior passage. The adaptive reuse architect integrated new commercial signage into a coherent graphic system, improving readability and reinforcing the identity of individual units, while maintaining overall unity. The civic architect introduced a subtle, layered lighting strategy to guide movement, emphasize depth and enhance the spatial sequence from street to interior.

Together, these elements articulate the entrance of the and clearly announce the new identity of the building rehabilitation, as the Passage Saint-Germain, reinforcing its role as an active urban passage within the city fabric.
