Espace Dagron
Description
The heritage building renovation was nominated for the “Première Œuvre” award in 2002 and received recognition in the French Ministry of Culture’s Architecture Awards the same year.
The civic architect draws on the site’s historical fabric, referencing both the former hall and the elongated, high-volume profile of the former hardware store. The compact, linear volume supports improved environmental performance. Its high-performance concrete envelope protects enhanced external insulation, complemented by a heat pump and rooftop solar panels.
Set back from the street, the building extends the market square and promotes pedestrian continuity. The cultural architect designs the steel-framed hall to open onto the square through a fully glazed ground-floor façade, revealing the first-floor reading room. Children’s, adult, and multimedia areas are arranged within a double-height volume with integrated acoustic treatment. A dedicated storytelling room, acoustically enclosed, opens onto the pedestrian square and is accessed via an internal gallery. Staff areas are set back, with direct access to reading rooms and immediate adjacency to the lending desk.
The cultural architect organizes the ground floor to accommodate reception, informal social spaces, and dedicated zones for youth and seniors. The upper level comprises offices and small meeting rooms, while dance and gymnastics studios occupy generous volumes within the roof space. The educational building design delivers a flexible, community-oriented cultural facility combining media, learning, and associative uses.
