Marché Secrétan, Paris 19e
Description
Located in the heart of Paris’s 19th Arrondissement, the Secrétan Market has been given a new life. Inspired by the Baltard market halls, this covered market, built in 1868, possesses a distinctive architectural and industrial heritage. Successive structural alterations had modified its original configuration prior to its inclusion on the Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments. Commissioned to undertake its rehabilitation, the adaptive reuse architect proposed a restoration that respects the building’s architectural integrity while introducing a program aligned with contemporary neighbourhood needs.
To preserve the exceptional character of the Secrétan Market, the civic architect undertook a detailed analytical study based on archival research and in close coordination with heritage conservation authorities. The market hall architecture includes the treatment of glazed façades, restoration of original brickwork, and the reinforcement of the cast-iron structural frame, supplemented by an independent steel structure. The three-tiered roof has been carefully reworked to integrate building services, including air treatment systems. These interventions required the coordination of highly specialised technical expertise.
A decade after its reopening, this heritage building renovation of the Secrétan Market has been widely embraced by the City of Paris and local residents alike. The hall is now fully reintegrated into the life of the neighbourhood, accommodating contemporary urban uses while preserving the memory of its remarkable industrial heritage.
