Marché Central de Colombes

Description

Built in the 1970s, the market hall in the town of Colombes presents an obsolete image and inefficient layout, disconnected from contemporary urban life. The project reactivates the market hall architecture of this civic hub, enhancing spatial comfort and doubling its capacity. The design privileges natural light, material refinement, and programmatic flexibility within a framework of architectural restraint and coherence.

Situated along a major thoroughfare, the market is reoriented around a renewed entrance on Rue Bournard, reinstating its role as a civic and social landmark — a place to shop, meet, and gather. Its heritage building renovation acts as a catalyst for the urban and identity renewal of central Colombes.

Beyond market hours, the hall transforms into a covered event space through modular furnishings and retractable mezzanines within the food court. This market hall architecture becomes an adaptive configuration, which accommodates community events and civic receptions. The expanded footprint introduces a new mezzanine beneath an elevated timber‑framed skylight, amplifying the central courtyard’s spatial generosity. A carefully curated material palette ensures durability and acoustic comfort. Natural light enters through the glazed roof, where a timber brise-soleil regulates solar gain, producing soft, diffuse, and evenly distributed illumination. Operable façade panels enable cross‑ventilation for thermal comfort, while rooftop basins harvest rainwater for irrigation and sanitary use, integrating environmental performance into the architectural expression.
