Archives historiques de la Nièvre
Description
To improve visitor reception, research conditions, and archival preservation in Nièvre, the Department commissioned the archive architect to restructure and extend the existing facility. The heritage building renovation adopts a simple, compact layout, with a semi-transparent façade for public areas and an opaque envelope for storage and conservation spaces. This interplay of contrasts, combined with a deliberate architectural and dramatic staging of the site, gives the building its distinctive identity.
From Rue Charles-Roy, the Nièvre Archives welcome the public within a new extension articulated by screen-printed glass façades. Set back slightly from the street line, the extension creates a forecourt that enhances pedestrian access and circulation.
Beyond the original building footprint, the archive architect designed an additional extension entirely devoted to controlled archival storage and conservation. These opaque storage volumes are clad in insulated brickwork, finished with precast concrete panels in tones reminiscent of Burgundy stone, ensuring thermal inertia and controlled hygrometric conditions essential for archival preservation.
Public-facing spaces — including reception, exhibition galleries, reading rooms, conference facilities, educational areas, digital consultation spaces and administrative offices — are designed with careful attention to acoustic, thermal and visual comfort.
In line with HQE certification principles, the listed building architect adopts a compact, efficient spatial organization with improved solar orientation. The layout and internal planning by the archive architect are designed to streamline circulation flows. Building volumes are kept simple, the external envelope is minimized, and both floor areas as well as building management systems are optimized for performance.
The reading room designed for calm and concentration by the listed building architect is a 400 m² open space, furnished with restrained, minimalist elements and fosters focused study. A mezzanine gallery above the central service desk overlooks the room and highlights the historic 1927 arch, a defining feature of the building.
